Rooming House Show 1986

The connection between You Can’t Hug Kids With Nuclear Arms and The Rooming House Show, between Chernobyl, Star Wars and abandoned housing is both moral and economic. A world in which the poor lose their homes to speculation is the same one that spends millions on building up the nuclear arsenal to keep the “peace,” instead of on food for the hungry and social development programs for all.

My art-making links diaristic, intimate images of personally meaningful moments and events with social issues and my cultural and political context. Our lives are played out within politically imposed limits.

The text of You Can’t Hug Kids With Nuclear Arms derives from books, newspapers, pamphlets, radio and peace information centres.

Thanks to Shirley Pettifer for assisting in the installation in The Rooming House Show.

Anti-Nuke Show 1983

Thanks to the women of Powerhouse Gallery for challenging artists/art to focus on the threat to us all of nuclear power. Thanks as well to those whose work provides the text, and, in particular, to Monique Regimbald-Zeiber for adapting and translating it into French.
