“Half a century ago, most people died before the age of fifty.” – The Gazette, Montreal, May, 1997

An installation of 30 black and white photographs, The 50s / La cinquantaine confronts issues and stereotypes about women in mid-life, as we approach and live through our 50s, a time of life not much photographed.

Who are we? What do we look like? What’s our social context? What issues do we face? How do we cope?

A ribbon of portraits is paired with columns of photographs of 2 or more women at work, in meetings, at parties, in living rooms and kitchens, in studios and offices, on the street and in the woods – the sustenance we provide for each other, the importance of our connections. Themes of self-affirmation, connectedness, contemplation, nourishment, action, camaraderie emerge. Energy is high.
