When my Montreal friend Shirley and I realized that both our kids – and then our grandkids – made their homes in Ottawa, we brought our two families together to celebrate two dead-of-winter January birthdays. No grandkids the first birthday gathering in 2001; the first baby appears in 2006, the rest joining us in subsequent years.

January birthdays and Ottawa became an annual tradition.
